Take the opportunity to get a close look at one of the largest current infrastructure projects in Sweden and get insight to the challenges in building a highway through a city!
"Norra länken" (The Northern Link) solves traffic problems while opening up new opportunities in the Stockholm region.
Together with "Södra länken" and Essingeleden, Norra länken builds a centrally located, inter-linking traffic system. Access and mobility will improve while at the same time enabling the construction of new housing and business developments in north-eastern Stockholm.
Norra länken is also necessary for safer inner city streets for pedestrians and cyclists. When completed, Norra länken will be some 5 kilometres long. Most of Norra länken is housed in underground tunnels, with the longest single stretch of tunnel being about 3 kilometres long.
Construction works began in 2007 and, according to the plans, Norra länken will be opened to traffic in 2015. It is estimated that Norra länken will cost about SEK 11.2 billion at the 2007 price level.
The national government (via the Swedish Road Administration) is responsible for 75 percent of the financing and the City of Stockholm for the remaining 25 percent.
Constructing Norra länken presents a challenge, as this new traffic route is being built in some of Sweden’s busiest traffic areas. During the entire construction period, which will take eight years, the intention is that traffic will flow as normal while works are in progress. Sophisticated traffic analyses, careful planning and the experience gained from the construction of much projects as Södra länken, which also was built through heavy traffic areas, means that Norra länken can be constructed with the least possible disturbance to nearby inhabitants and road users.
