Background
Excellent Technical leadership is a prerequisite for development of next generation complex systems. This is especially so in a Swedish context where resources will be scarce compared to the situation for international competitors. A successful technical leader must have a wide set of competencies ranging from core engineering competence and product knowledge over general Systems Engineering competence to personal leadership skills. This competence set can only be attained through a combination of formal education, training courses and practical experience in development projects. Hence, the competence development must be continuous and implemented in a structured way.
We understand the present situation such that there exists:
- Well defined programs and courses for honing general leadership skills.
- A multitude of shorter and longer courses focused on engineering subjects.
However, there is no consensus on the competences needed for successful technical leadership, on how to build a technical leadership capability within an organisation and for individual employees.
The workshop provides the venue for discussing:
- What is technical leadership?
- Who are the technical leaders in an organisation?
- What characterises good technical leadership?
- What are the key competences for effective technical leadership?
- Mechanisms for an improved technical leadership capability?
The workshop will be initiated with a presentation on technical leadership from the participants of the Saab Aeronautics Advanced Engineering Training Program. There is space for a few shorter presentations on technical leadership from other participants. The main focus will be on discussing needs as well as present and future mechanisms for meeting the identified needs related to technical leadership.
Please contact Erik Herzog @ Herzog.erik@gmail.com if you want give a presentation on any topic of technical leadership as part of the workshop. Presentations shall be structured such that they stimulate discussions among workshop participants.
